Answers to the most common questions from U.S. operators about ordering, financing, certification, customization, and after sales support.
A trackless train is a battery-powered locomotive and wagon system that operates on standard paved surfaces without rails or embedded track. The locomotive drives on wheels and steers through each wagon using a mechanical linkage system, so all wagons follow the exact path of the locomotive. Wattman trains use a 48-volt AC electric drive system with a 5th generation e-Pedal controller. They operate indoors and outdoors on asphalt, concrete, and smooth pavement at a maximum speed of 3.8 mph.
Wattman trains are operated by venues that generate revenue from guest transportation or enhance their guest experience with a paid or included ride. The most common operators in the U.S. are shopping malls, zoos, amusement parks, city parks, resorts, hotels, and family entertainment centers. Wattman trains are also used by event rental companies for fairs, seasonal activations, and corporate events.
Passenger capacity depends on the model and configuration. The Mini Express in a 4-wagon configuration carries approximately 18 adults and children per ride cycle, or up to 24 small children. The Maxi Express in a 4-wagon configuration carries approximately 24 adults and children, or up to 32 small children. Exact capacity depends on your selected wagon configuration and passenger mix.
Wattman trains operate on standard paved surfaces including asphalt, concrete, and smooth pavement. The surface must be reasonably level and free of significant debris or standing water. Both models handle smooth indoor flooring and outdoor paved paths equally well. For surfaces with minor irregularities, the suspension system absorbs small bumps without passenger discomfort.
Yes. Both the Mini Express and Maxi Express handle a maximum grade of 7% incline when fully loaded, equivalent to approximately 4 degrees. This covers the majority of outdoor venue circuits including park paths, resort grounds, and mall entrance ramps. Grades steeper than 7% are not recommended and may affect battery runtime and braking performance.
Yes. Both the Mini Express and Maxi Express are designed for indoor and outdoor operation. For operators in challenging climates, the Maxi Express offers optional weatherproofing including roll-up windows on all wagons and a windshield on the locomotive. For year-round outdoor operation, the train should be stored overnight in a dry and well-ventilated space to protect the electrical system, wood structure, and exterior finish.
Three factors separate Wattman from most competitors. First, independent certification: every Wattman train is certified by TÜV Nederland to EN 13814:2019 and conforms to ASTM F2291 and ASTM F1193 — the U.S. standards for amusement ride design and manufacturing. Second, North American service infrastructure: parts and technical support are available from Florida and Texas, not shipped from overseas. Third, build quality: Wattman trains use a proven 5th generation AC drive system, commercial-grade components, and a wood structure built for continuous daily operation across multiple seasons.
Wattman has been designing and manufacturing electric trackless trains since the early 1990s. U.S. operators have been running Wattman trains since 1992. The current Mini Express and Maxi Express represent over 30 years of continuous development, with each generation incorporating feedback from operators across the United States and internationally.
Wattman established the design language for the modern electric trackless train. Many manufacturers have copied the visual style and general format of the Wattman product line. The differences are in what is not visible: the quality of components, the engineering behind the drive system, the certification documentation, and the after sales infrastructure. A train that looks similar is not the same product, and the difference becomes clear when an insurer or state authority asks for compliance documentation.
The price difference reflects specific choices made during manufacturing. Wattman trains use commercial-grade components that meet recognized safety standards, an independently certified design, and a build quality intended for daily operation across multiple seasons. Lower-priced alternatives typically use lower-grade components, self-declared certifications, and no after sales infrastructure. The price gap does not disappear — it transfers to the operator as operating risk, insurance exposure, and potential compliance liability.
Wattman trains are consistently rated by U.S. operators for low maintenance, long operational life, and reliable daily performance. The combination of independent TÜV certification, a North American service network, and a drive system built for continuous use makes Wattman the preferred choice for operators who run their train as a revenue-generating asset rather than a seasonal attraction. Many Wattman trains in U.S. venues have been in continuous operation for over a decade.

Your sales advisor will confirm the estimated lead time at the time of order.
Wattman trains arrive assembled and ready to operate. No on-site installation is required for standard deliveries. The locomotive and wagons are delivered connected and only need to be unloaded and placed on your operating surface. A brief operator orientation can be arranged with your sales advisor if needed.
Wattman trains are shipped fully assembled and secured in a trailer truck. To unload safely, you will need either a loading dock or a flatbed tow truck. Forklifts cannot be used for unloading. Detailed unloading instructions are provided prior to delivery so you can prepare your site in advance.
All Wattman trains are inspected and documented before dispatch. Shipments are covered by freight insurance. If damage occurs during transit, document it immediately upon delivery with photos and notify our Florida office on the same day. We will coordinate with the carrier and arrange repair or replacement parts as quickly as possible.
Ex-works pickup is available for operators who prefer to arrange their own transport. This option must be agreed upon at the time of order. Wattman USA will provide full documentation including dimensions, weights, and loading instructions to support your transport arrangement.
Most Wattman trains are transported inside a standard enclosed cargo trailer. One trailer covers both the Mini Express and Maxi Express and accommodates a full locomotive with up to four wagons, with additional room for props, signage, and promotional materials. Your train is delivered fully assembled, but operators who relocate between venues, events, or seasonal locations will transport it themselves. The recommended trailer specification, loading procedure, and safety notes are provided in your Wattman USA Owner Information Sheet at delivery.
The recommended trailer is the Cargo Express XL Series (part number XLW8.5X24TE3), 8.5 ft wide by 24 ft long, with a 78 in interior height and a 93.5 in wide by 75 in high rear door opening. The floor is all-wood with a dove tail for easier loading. Empty trailer weight is approximately 4,000 lbs with a 9,990 lb GVWR, giving 5,990 lbs of usable cargo capacity, well above the weight of a fully configured Mini or Maxi Express. The trailer runs on tandem 5,200 lb axles with electric brakes, a 2 5/16 in coupler with safety chains, and ST225/75R15 6-lug radial tires.
No. The locomotive must never be reversed with wagons attached. Always disconnect the wagons before reverse maneuvering on ramps or inside the trailer, and load each unit separately. If a brake wagon is installed, release its brakes per the owner’s manual before loading. Following this procedure prevents linkage stress, drivetrain damage, and uncontrolled movement on the ramp. None of these are covered under warranty.
Wattman trains must always be stored in a dry, well-ventilated indoor location, never outdoors, even under a cover. For daily and short-term storage, park the train on a stable, level surface, turn all electrical systems off, clean and dry the train thoroughly if it was operated in damp conditions, and verify the batteries hold sufficient charge between uses. Indoor storage protects the electrical system, wood structure, and exterior finish, and is a condition of your warranty.
No. Outdoor storage is prohibited under any circumstances, not under a roof, not under a canopy, and not under a protective cover. Outdoor exposure causes moisture accumulation and condensation that progressively damages electrical systems and structural components. Damage caused by outdoor storage is not covered under warranty. If you do not have indoor space available at your venue, contact our Florida office before delivery and we will help you evaluate your options.
Before placing the train into long-term or winter storage, complete the following: clean the locomotive and wagons thoroughly and perform a full inspection, fully charge the batteries, turn off all electrical systems, and disconnect the smoke machine power plug. Store the train in a dry, ventilated indoor space protected from freezing and excessive heat. During storage, recharge the batteries at least every 30 days, or leave them connected to an automatic maintenance charger for the duration of the storage period.
During storage, Wattman train batteries must be recharged at least every 30 days to prevent sulfation and permanent capacity loss. Operators who store their train for longer periods are strongly advised to connect the batteries to an automatic maintenance charger for the full duration of the storage period. Lead-acid batteries that are left discharged for extended periods will lose capacity and may fail prematurely. Battery damage caused by neglected charging is not covered under warranty.
Every new Wattman train includes a 24 months imited warranty covering manufacturing defects and structural components. Warranty terms are outlined in your order agreement and vary by component category. Electrical systems, drive components, and structural elements each have specific coverage periods. Contact our Florida office for the full warranty terms applicable to your model and configuration.

Wattman trains require routine maintenance to maintain performance and warranty coverage. This includes daily pre-operation checks, periodic inspection of the drive system and linkage, battery maintenance and watering for lead-acid systems, lubrication of mechanical components, and annual inspection by a certified amusement ride inspector as required by your state. Full maintenance procedures are documented in the operator manual delivered with your train.
Routine operator maintenance performed according to the Wattman operator manual does not affect your warranty. Modifications, unauthorized repairs, or work performed by unqualified technicians may void warranty coverage on affected components. If you are uncertain whether a planned repair qualifies, contact our support team before proceeding.
With proper maintenance, Wattman trains are built for continuous daily operation across multiple seasons. Many Wattman trains in U.S. venues have been in active operation for over a decade. The wood structure, drive system, and electrical components are all specified for long-term commercial use. Battery replacement is typically required every 3 to 4 years depending on usage intensity and maintenance practices.
Spare parts are ordered directly through Wattman USA. All OEM parts are shipped directly from the factory to you. To place a parts order, contact our support team with your train model, serial number, and the part description. Our team will identify the correct part and coordinate shipment directly from the manufacturer.
Yes. Every Wattman train comes with comprehensive manuals and safety guidelines. We also provide onboarding materials to get your team up and running quickly. Optional paid onsite training sessions are available for operators who prefer hands-on instruction. This ensures your team operates the train correctly, safely, and in line with your state’s compliance requirements.
The standard battery system consists of 8 lead-acid batteries, 6V, 225 AH, charged via a 120V AC universal charger. Recharge time is approximately 8 to 10 hours. For operators running multiple daily shifts or longer route circuits, an optional Lithium-Ion battery pack is available. The Lithium-Ion upgrade delivers extended runtime and faster recharge cycles. Contact our sales team to discuss which system fits your operating profile.
Yes. Every Wattman Mini Express and Maxi Express is independently certified by TÜV Nederland to EN 13814:2019 Parts 1, 2, and 3, covering design, manufacture, and construction. Both models conform to ASTM F2291 and ASTM F1193 — the U.S. standards for amusement ride design and manufacturing referenced by 44 states for commercial operation. Full certification documentation is included with every train at delivery.
TÜV Nederland is part of the TÜV NORD GROUP, one of the world’s most recognized independent technical inspection organizations. TÜV certification means an accredited third-party body — not the manufacturer — independently reviewed structural calculations, verified stability under load, and checked critical components before issuing a certificate. For U.S. operators, TÜV certification demonstrates that the train was not self-certified by the manufacturer, which is what your insurer and state authority will ask about when reviewing your compliance documentation.
Wattman trains are trackless by design and operate on standard paved surfaces without any embedded infrastructure. There is no requirement for tracks, rails, or surface modification. In 44 states, operating a commercial trackless train with paying guests requires a valid operating permit, annual inspection by a certified inspector, and proof of liability insurance. Wattman USA provides the certification documentation needed to support your permit application in any U.S. state.
Most lower-priced trains sold into the U.S. market carry only a CE mark or self-declared certifications. CE marking satisfies European market access requirements but does not fulfill U.S. ASTM compliance requirements. Self-certification means the manufacturer wrote their own safety report with no independent verification. Wattman trains carry independently issued TÜV certification that conforms to ASTM standards — the documentation your insurer and state authority will request when reviewing your operating compliance.
Full certification documentation is delivered with your train at handover. This includes the TÜV Nederland certificate, inspection records, compliance declarations, and the serial compliance plate installed on the train. If you need additional copies or documentation for your insurer or state authority, contact our support team with your serial number and we will provide the necessary paperwork.
Wattman Mini Express and Maxi Express trains are not road-legal and are not designed for operation on public roads shared with motor vehicles. They operate on private or closed paved circuits within venue boundaries. For operators who require road-legal tourist trains for city circuits or public route operation, Wattman USA works with The Train Company, which specializes in road-legal people movers and tourist trains.
Yes. Every Wattman train is built to your venue’s specifications. You can customize the color scheme and livery of the locomotive and wagons to match your venue’s visual identity. Logo application and custom graphics are available through our Custom Branding option. Wagon Ad Panels are also available as a separate option, allowing exterior wagon panels to carry sponsor or venue branding that can be changed between seasons.
Both the Mini Express and Maxi Express are available in three editions: Essential, Classic, and Signature. The Essential Edition covers the core configuration for operators who want a reliable daily operation. The Classic Edition adds a second passenger wagon and Wheels in Motion for enhanced visual appeal. The Signature Edition includes the full guest experience package with Audio Package, Microphone on Gooseneck, and Smoke Machine. All three editions share the same proven locomotive and electric drive system.
Yes. Wattman offers a range of factory-installed options that are configured before delivery. Available options include the Audio Package with onboard speakers for music and announcements, Sound in Motion for authentic locomotive sounds, Smoke Machine for a visual steam effect, and Wheels in Motion for lifelike rotating decorative wheels. Anti-Collision System and Camera Driver are also available for operators who want enhanced safety and visibility features. All options are installed at the factory and covered under the standard warranty.
Yes. If none of the standard editions match your requirements exactly, our sales team will work with you to build a custom configuration. This can include specific wagon counts, color specifications, selected options, and branding requirements. Custom configurations may affect lead time. Contact our Florida-based sales team to discuss your requirements and receive a tailored proposal.
Yes. Both the Mini Express and Maxi Express are available in 3-wagon and 4-wagon configurations. The 3-wagon configuration includes the locomotive, one passenger wagon, and a caboose. The 4-wagon configuration adds an additional passenger wagon for higher capacity. For the Mini Express, a coal wagon is also available as part of the 4-wagon setup. Your sales advisor will help you select the configuration that best fits your venue layout, operating route, and capacity requirements.
Some options can be added after delivery depending on the complexity of the installation. Factory-installed options such as the Audio Package, and Wheels in Motion are best specified at the time of order. Retrofitting after delivery may be possible for certain components but is not guaranteed for all options. Contact our support team to discuss what is feasible for your existing configuration.
